What is Kinetic Sand?
Traditional Kinetic Sand takes fun to a whole new level! Kinetic sand is regular sand that has unique properties since it has polymers added to it. These disable friction forces between the sand particles making it into moldable sand. When you press it together it feels like wet sand. It doesn’t stick to you like regular sand does, which will allow you to create really cool sculptures and shapes!
The best part? It’s super easy to clean up afterwards!
Homemade Kinetic Sand Recipe
Supplies:
- 2.5 cups regular play sand (buy colored sand in different colors)
- 1.5 cups of cornstarch
- ½ cup vegetable oil or canola oil
Directions:
In a large bowl, mix dry sand and corn starch together.
Add the oil and mix well with your hands.
Once the sand is damp, start kneading it with your hands until it forms a smooth, pliable dough. If the dough is too sticky, add more sand; if it’s too dry, add a few drops of water
Some things you might want to have on hand for play time when making your own kinetic sand recipe:
Some sensory play materials such as: a large bin or play tray for sand play, a measuring cup, sand molds, cookie cutters, shovels, bowls, cups, cones, figurines and small toys, etc. You can get as creative as you want with it!
Kinetic sand is a great way to get kids moving and exploring. It’s not edible though, so make sure you always watch them closely when using it. Be sure to wash hands after as well.
How Should I Store Kinetic Sand?
Your batch of Kinetic Sand will last longest when stored in an airtight container. This will keep it from drying out and becoming crumbly.
