DIY Trash Can Deodorizer Pods
Prep time: 10 minutes
Setting time: 24 hours
Servings: 6
Ingredients
- 1 cup of baking soda
- 10 – 15 drops of essential oils
- Water
Supplies Used:
- Medium-sized bowl
- Spoon
- A silicone mold or ice cube tray
- Container to store them in
Instructions
In a medium-sized bowl, add in the baking soda. Then add in your favorite essential oil. The amount of essential oil will depend on how much scent you are looking for, but 10 – 15 drops is suggested.
The first batch you make will be a test run as you may adjust in the second one.
Then SLOWLY add in one tablespoon of warm water at a time and stir the ingredients together until the baking soda mixture becomes a wet sand consistency. If you add too much water in at once, it will start to fizz and activate and that isn’t what you want to happen.
Once you have gotten the consistency of damp sand and when you take a scoop of the mixture into your hand and smash it together and it stays in shape, then it is ready to be put into the mold.
Using a spoon, scoop out the mixture and place it into each silicone tray. Make sure that you press the mixture firmly into each mold cavity.
Let the mold set for 24 hours.
To remove the deodorizing tabs, carefully remove them from the mold by pressing on the bottom and sides of the mold.
When you are ready to use them, place a tab in the bottom of the can. Then remove and replace with a fresh one as needed. You may find you need to add two at a time.
Tips for Success When Making Trashcan Deodorizer Tabs
Store the homemade garbage tabs in an airtight container.
Make sure to test one of the molds to ensure they have dried before continuing to remove them all. If one isn’t dried, then none of them are. Continue to check for dryness at one-hour increments. You can also place the mold in the freezer for two hours to help them along at the end.
If you don’t feel the scent is strong enough, add more drops of essential oil when making the next batch. Since the price point of these is very budget-friendly, you can definitely make them again.
Essential Oils to Try
The natural oils and refreshing scents of lemongrass oil has antibacterial properties, rodents and bugs. Tea tree oil helps to combat the spread of odor-causing smells while citrus oils (like grapefruit or
lemon essential oil) can keep away those pesky insects! You can also try a nice peppermint scent as well.
